Juanita Stein talks about A Ballad for the Bleeding Hearts

When I think of this song, I recall a period of intense creativity back when I was living in Sydney, Australia. I shared a flat with Glenn, Howling Bells drummer, and being a real ‘crab’ (Cancerian) I would spend a lot of time in my room thinking and writing songs.

Most of the first Bells record was written during this time. I remember very clearly writing BFBH, the chords, lyrics, sentiment etc came together very quickly. I remember thinking this is exactly how it goes, like I was relearning an old song.

The way it sounds as you know it, is a result of the band/producer’s intensely nuanced interpretation. Definitely one of my all time favourite songs to play live!

On BFBH

I had not long before recovered from a pretty excruciating break up and I believe these songs were the result of having survived this. I had to find a way to breathe when all I had known up until that point had altered so dramatically.

The way it sounds as you know it, is a result of the band/producer’s intensely nuanced interpretation. Definitely one of my all time favourite songs to play live!

Lyrics: A Ballad for the Bleeding Hearts

And I will wait for this moment to come around
And I will scream just to get you to hold me down

Tried all I could
Told you to move
Buried our hearts with our hands
You told me a lie
I turned a blind eye
And never a lie did I hear
Now I fear

That I will wait
For this moment to come around
And I will scream just to get you to hold me down

I’m not crying anymore
Coz love isn’t love till you bleed
And I’m not lying for you now
My heart wants to beat with the sound
But I found out
Just go ahead and cry

Tried all I could
I told you to move
We buried our hearts in our hands

You told me a lie
I turned a blind eye
Never a lie did I hear
Now I fear

That I will wait
For this moment to come around
And I will scream just to get you to hold me down
