Loop: In Case I Fall For You

Black Sea Dahu are singer-songwriter Janine Cathrein and a gang of musical cohorts. Think: Modern-day Ken Kesey and the Merry Pranksters. But instead of dropping copious amounts of LSD and driving around in a VW mini-bus, they trip out on sound and studio-related cabin fever.  [Spotify]

Janine Cathrein talks about In Case I Fall For You

In Case I Fall for You was the first song we released as Black Sea Dahu and it was like a wildfire that brought us forward.

It’s about yet another love that didn’t work out. There is sad sarcasm and irony in this song but I know that it probably sounds more like a great love song, which it is as well, no doubt. When I wrote it, I didn’t believe I would ever be able to have a healthy relationship with trust and love, and commitment. I found myself repeating the same old pattern time and time again… to fall in love and feel wonderful, confident, and exactly in the right place, to lose oneself, to fall in love with someone else, and to break apart between these two people, then to look for the whole blame on myself. To fall for someone can mean two things: To fall in love and to be deceived by somebody, that’s what I play within this song.

Janine on In Case I Fall For You

In its early stages, the song was leaning more towards Reggae, but I like the version as it is now so much better! I hear so much nature and space in it, it makes me feel like I am flying, like I am a cowgirl riding through the desert on my cool horse, haha. I love the recording, even after so many years of playing it live I think it’s a great fucking song!

Paul, the bassist/guitarist, came up with the synth hook and I did some of the percussion by just walking around the house and recording the sound of my shoes on a pebble path. The insane 12 string guitar melody at the end of the song was only created in the studio in Norway by Gavin Gardiner. We jammed almost every night until 2 am because up north in Norway in May it doesn’t really get dark, so we were veeery awake! And that’s just how the idea of this guitar line came about I guess, or at least the inspiration for it. It’s fire!

Lyrics

In case I fall for you
Will you burn all boats behind you and hit the road with me?
And as we pull through
Two partners in crime
We settle down in Alabama and pretend we’re free from fear

In case I provoke you to fury
Will you play the husky voice card and show me that our love can heal?
And as we live the life of Riley
Will our browntanned skin and the wind up the hills keep at bay all our demons within?

Oh I think I love you
Once again an old flag was blown away
Oh I think I’m in love
In love with you
Nowhere else will I find peace but when I’m with you

In case I fail to remain true to you
Will you say we are meant to be and that’s why you won’t leave?
And as I slash your devoted heart
Will you put up with him being next to me?
‘Cause that’s how love’s supposed to be
Or will you walk out of the tale I really wanted to be real?

Oh I think I love you
Once again an old flag was blown away
Oh I think I’m in love
In love with you
Nowhere else will I find peace but when I’m with you

Oh I think I love you
Once again an old flag was blown away
Oh I think I’m in love
In love with you
Nowhere else will I find peace but when I’m with you
