About Candi

Candi Staton is an American singer–songwriter, best known in the United States for her 1970 remake of Tammy Wynette’s “Stand By Your Man” and her 1976 disco chart-topper “Young Hearts Run Free”. She is a four-time Grammy Award nominee.

In Europe, Staton’s biggest selling record is the anthemic “You Got the Love” from 1986, released in collaboration with the Source. The song was remixed and re-released in 1991, 1997, and 2006.

In 2008, the song was covered by English singer and songwriter Joss Stone for her fourth studio album, Colour Me Free!, released in October 2009. In November 2009, another cover version was released as a single by English indie rock band Florence and the Machine.

The Now Voyager Remix of the song was used for the theme tune of live Football League coverage on Sky Sports until the start of the 2014–15 season.

It also soundtracked the huge finale to the TV show Sex and the City in 2004, and played over a crucial scene the same year in the British thriller Layer Cake with Daniel Craig and Sienna Miller in it.

Lyrics: You Got the Love

Sometimes I feel like throwing my hands up in the air
I know I can count on you

Sometimes I feel like saying, “Lord, I just don’t care”
But you’ve got the love I need to see me through

Sometimes I see that the boy is just too rough
And things go wrong no matter what I do
Now it feels like life is just too much
You’ve got the love I need to see me through

Sometimes I feel like throwing my hands up in the air
I know I can count on you

Sometimes I feel like saying, “Lord, I just don’t care”
But you’ve got the love I need to see me through

Time after time I say, “Oh Lord what’s the use?”
Time after time I say, “This just won’t do”
But sooner or later in life the things you love you lose
Just like before, I know I call you

I can’t believe my palms, degrading friends of you
I can’t believe my fire, oh Lord, what must I do
I can’t believe what I caught up, master made me new
But you’ve got the love I need to see me through

Sometimes I feel like throwing my hands up in the air
I know I can count on you

Sometimes I feel like saying, “Lord, I just don’t care”
But you’ve got the love I need to see me through

You’ve got the love x4

I need to see me through x4

You’ve got the love, you’ve got the love, you’ve got the love
You’ve got the love, you’ve got the love, you’ve got the love

Mmm…
